Income tax is a tax on the total amount of net income an individual receives whether it is from wages, inheritance, or from gains on investments. Often this is compared to a consumption tax, which are like sales taxes and taxes generated when people buy specific goods like alcohol or tobacco. Some people argue that the consumption tax is a much better way to go about taxing as opposed to taxing total earning. They argue this because people that earn more spend more. This is incorrect and will be disputed in this article.

The benefits of taxing total earnings far outnumber the consumer tax advocates arguments. People who earn more do not necessarily spend more. This is a generalization and just isn’t correct. One advantage of the income tax is that people who make less have to pay less in tax. Even if they consume the same as a rich person, if the rich person is really a hoarder should they have to pay the same in taxes? That just seems terribly unfair. Another point to think about is that two rich people with the same incomes may not consume the same. For instance one rich person may have simple tastes and not spend very much of his income, and on the other hand you may have a person with equal amount of wealth and income who has very unique and lavish tastes and spends almost all of their income.

Another argument against the consumption tax is that it would affect lower income and middle class people more than people with higher incomes. This is evident once you look at how much the cost of necessities would increase by whatever the consumption tax rate was set at. Rich people and poor people really have the same necessities whether it is food, water, shelter, transportation, and any number of other things people cannot live without in today’s society. Now it is true that people with higher incomes as a majority do spend more on the necessities as they have higher standards than people with lower incomes, but as the example above illustrated it is not always that way. There are many people in society that have millions in the bank and investments, and you would never even know it because they drive an old pickup or a beat up car and dress no different than someone with a lower income.

Another reason that the income tax is a much better way of taxing than the consumption tax is that it makes it much easier to keep track of taxes. In a consumption tax society the people might have to save every receipt for certain purchases in order to get back any return on the taxes they spend or to qualify for tax breaks. It is much easier to use the system already in place than for the government to spend the tax payer’s money to implement a new less efficient system.

Income is a simpler way to determine taxation and deductions. While people may deal with savings a few pay stubs and collecting a receipt on interest earned from investments like they currently have under a tax-on-earnings system. In a consumption tax system people would have to save receipts for every purchase they made during a year and keep track of every time they spent money and what they spent it on in order to qualify for certain refunds and tax breaks.

Although there is some disadvantages to the income tax system. It is generally accepted that a tax on earning system is quite more complicated than just a point of sale tax. Also many people argue, especially libertarians, that a tax-on-earnings is a violation of individual liberty and freedom. They say that the government does not have a right to tax individuals based on net earnings because it limits how much they can spend. One last disadvantage of the income tax is that many people who get paid in cash do not pay an income tax and they can successfully evade paying any taxes at all. That would not be able to take place in a consumption tax system. The only people that could evade taxes in that system are those that never purchased anything. Even if they purchase a lot one year and stock up so they don’t have to purchase anything next year the only benefit they could receive from doing this is if the consumption tax rate went up the following year, but if tax rate went down the next year they would have paid more. Either way it is highly unlikely that anyone would make this gamble to try to pay less in taxes, and it isn’t feasible to just not purchase anything for an entire year in the world we live in today.

Regardless of what system of taxation you argue for both methods are currently in use today. Most local government agencies impose a sales tax on goods and services sold in their jurisdiction. Then the federal government taxes the incomes people make from generating those goods. Neither form of taxation has given the governments enough revenue in the past decade. The people who make the most in this country pay much more in taxes than those who don’t make very much.

As a result of the complexity of taxation and the tax code many people argue for a flat-tax. Where everyone pays the same percentage of taxes regardless of how much income they make. This system also has its pros and cons.

Only one thing can be certain when discussing taxation and that is that there are a multitude of opinions and reasons people came to that opinion. There are very intelligent economists who have the same credentials and experience who completely disagree on which system would have the least harmful effects or most beneficial effects for the country as a whole. Perhaps only time and history will tell humanity what form of taxation is best or perhaps no taxation could somehow become the law of the land as many economists of the Austrian school of economics have argued.

Nobody likes paying taxes, but it’s inevitable. While income tax goes to pay for a variety of services around the country, it can be a difficult thing to try to figure out on your own. Maybe you’re debating on whether you should get help or not. Here are a few benefits to help you make your decision.

One of the biggest benefits of seeking income tax help is finding tax breaks. Find an expert-anyone certified in the field-and have them look over your finances. You just might be surprised, your expert may help you find deductions that you missed. Even if your expert cannot find a new deduction for you, he or she may be able to suggest ways you can get money back in the future. It’ll be a significant help if your expert can provide you with valuable insight that will lead to the IRS giving you money.

No one likes overpaying for anything, especially when it comes to paying the government. How can you know if you have overpaid if you don’t seek income tax help? Seeking the aid of a tax expert can significantly reduce overpaying by helping you fully comprehend everything you need to know about income tax. By not overpaying, you keep more of your own money.

Seeking help on your income tax is beneficial to you in case you are audited by the IRS. If a mistake has been made, and the government wants to talk to you about it, you don’t have to feel stressed about being solely responsible. While it is true that these are your finances, you can always defer blame to the qualified individual who knew what he or she was doing. It really helps to have a knowledgeable individual to stand firmly behind you.

If you get income tax help, you’ll have someone to answer all of your tax-related questions. A lot of people still have questions about their taxes, but they generally don’t know who to ask. Seeking income tax help is one of the best ways to get your questions answered. It doesn’t do anyone any good if you simply stifle your questions and worry at night, wondering if you did the right thing. Tax experts are there to help and serve you. They’d be more than happy to assist you with your tax-related inquiries.

Finding income tax help is one of the best things you can do for your finances every year. No matter what you think you may know about income tax, you can’t go wrong if you get a little help. A second opinion is always best.

Income tax consultants help taxpayers in complying with federal tax laws, and enable them to utilize the exemptions, and benefits, if any, available to them under these laws most suited to their entrepreneur skills and qualities. In the United States, IRS or the Internal Revenue Service is the agency responsible for tax collection. Taxpayers may be individuals, corporations, freelancers, proprietors, LLCs, etc. These taxpayers pay their taxes annually.

Tax is calculated on taxpayer’s income in the year preceding the year in which the tax return is filed. Therefore, the income is relevant to the year preceding the assessment year. Almost every year, there are some changes in federal tax laws, and an average taxpayer, even if a corporation, or LLC, may not be aware of the latest tax provisions, and rules relating to tax deductions. In addition to the complexity of tax laws, there may be exceptional conditions leading to tax cases, and relevant clarifications, which an ordinary taxpayer may not be aware of. This is the reason people seek the assistance of income tax consultants.

Of late, the number of consultants in the US has increased considerably. Consultants are experts from different fields. The IRS differentiates between consultants, and employees through twenty laws regarding the subject. Consultants or freelancers generally practice from their homes. Effectively, some of their personal expenses become inseparable as part of their professional expenses. But a consultant may deduct many of these, or at least, a percentage of these from annual income that he or she earns. This would leave him or her with lower taxable income, and consequently he or she would be liable to pay lower taxes.

Tax deductions are expenses that may be deducted from annual income. These include costs incurred for purchasing professional magazines, journals, and stationary. Charges for Internet access, website hosting, FedEx, postage, etc. are also allowed as deductions. Likewise, the consultant can deduct any fees he or she pays to an accountant or attorney for their services, provided these services are related to consultant’s line of business. Business travel costs and vehicle tax deduction is differentiated from regular commuting expenses. Regular commuting costs are generally not deductible, but in some cases, you might be able to take a commuting tax deduction.

The consultant can also deduct depreciation on computers and other gadgets that he or she may use while working. From here starts a different way of accounting such deductible costs. If the consultant uses the same computer and conditioner for personal use, then such costs cannot be deducted entirely from the income of the consultant. Instead, the consultant is allowed to deduct only proportionate costs towards such expenses from the income of that year. Similarly, the entire amount paid towards electricity bills, telephone bills, heating bills, etc., is not allowed as deduction against consultant’s income, if the consultant works from his or her home. The consultant may use their personal car for official purposes as well. Therefore, depreciation too will have to be considered proportionately.

Consultants usually incur entertainment costs, and business promotion costs. Some of these costs are not permitted. For example, a consultant can show an evening gown or tuxedo as an expense, but an Armani suit or reputed designer ensemble would not qualify for similar deduction. Similarly, consultant is not allowed to deduct charges for using any gym from his or her personal income, but is allowed to deduct membership fees paid to any professional body. The consultant may even choose to study further, and join some professional course. These costs may also be deducted completely from the income that the consultant earns. It is obvious from the above that consultants are eligible to take many tax deductions.
